One of my Blog reader Arjun wants to share some great important things with us. I appreciate his wish to help others.

Arjun Says:

I am Arjun, I have attended the Power grid interview on 3-Nov-2008 at Bhubaneshwar. I like to share some of the questions that I have faced in the interview.

The Interview panel comprises a team of 6 persons, as this interview is for the post of AE to work under Rural Electrification projects in the states of West Bengal and Orissa, apart from the Technical skills they looked for knowledge in Hindi also. As the work comprises mostly of construction of Distribution sub-statation and Distribution of the supply. They very much concentrated on the Power systems and they also posed questions in the Power Electronics.

On an average the interview will go around half-an-hour as said earlier they looking for both Hindi and Technical skills in the Candidate. I am posting some questions here which I have faced in the interview. Hope it will be useful for the people who are atteninding the interviews.

1) What is a Triode? What are its uses?
2) What is a Triac?
3) What is a Thyristor?
4) What is the HVDC Transmission System?
5) What are the conditions applicable to lay an HVDC Line?
6) Does Conveter and Inveter has same ckt? Explain.
7) Why do we use only Sinusoidal Wave in AC supply why not the Square,Triangle or Sawtooth etc?
What constraints regarding the HVDC Transmission System?
9) Explain the Local Distribution System?
10) What are the different types of transformers present in the Transmission and Distribution system?
11) How would you supply a single house hold load from a 3-phase supply coming out of a sub-station?
12) How would you supply power to a village which is very far from a sub-station and has only a 11kV line running near by?
13) What are the important structures of a local Distribution System?
14) Name any Five Major Rivers of country?( we should answer in Hindi)
15) Name the Person who became President of India from A.P?(In Hindi)
16) Name the Person who became P.M of India form A.P? (In Hindi)
17) Name the Famous Power Plants present in A.P? (In Hindi)
18) Are you willing to work in the rural Areas of Orissa?

They may ask question on your native place, name, college etc., to test our language skills and confidence levels in answering it.

Thank you Raju for giving  me this oppurtunity, hope in future I can contribute more for this site.

Regards,
Arjun

The country’s first indigenously built nuclear power reactor Madras Atomic Power Station Unit-1 (MAPS-1), located at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu will complete 25 years today. MAPS was Synchronised to the grid in the presence of late prime minister Indira Gandhi on July 23, 1983. MAPS comprises two units of 220 MW each of pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWR). MAPS-1 was set up at a cost of Rs 2.4 billion ($57 million).

MAPS has supplied more than 45,000 million units (MUs) of electricity at a current tariff of Rs 1.89 per unit and earned a profit of Rs 11.2 billion so far. Tamil Nadu has a share of 330 MW out of the station capacity of 440 MW in addition to the share of other beneficiary states in the southern electricity region.

NPCIL(Nuclear Power Corporation of India LTD) said that in the recent past, MAPS-1 and MAPS-2 have undergone major renovation and modernisation and, safety upgradation and en-mass coolant channels replacements. The statement added that all NPCIL stations, including MAPS, have performed “excellently” in terms of safety, achieving over 280 reactor-years of safe and accident-free operations.

All NPCIL operations stations have secured ISO-14001 certification (Environment Management System). Presently NPCIL has 17 nuclear power units in India with a total installed capacity of 4120 MW in operation and six additional units with a total capacity of 3160 MW under construction.

About Madras Atomic Power Station:
Madras Atomic Power Station located at Kalpakkam about 80 km south of Chennai, India, is a comprehensive nuclear power production, fuel reprocessing, and waste treatment facility that includes plutonium fuel fabrication for fast breeder reactors [FBRs]. It is also India’s first fully indegenously constructed nuclear power station. It has two units of 220 MWe capacity each. The first and second units of the station went critical in 1983 and 1985 respectively. The station has reactors housed in a reactor building with double shell containment ensuring total protection even in the remotest possibility of loss of coolant accident. An Interim Storage Facility [ISF] is also located in Kalpakkam.

1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri project in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh Thursday evening resumed power generation after the level of silt suddenly came down in the Sutlej river.
The plant was closed for nine days, causing power shortage in north India including Punjab, Haryana and Delhi.
The silt content in the river had crossed 9,500 ppm (parts per million), whereas the permissible limit is 4,000 ppm, forcing authorities to suspend power generation in all six units of 250 MW each.
As the silt level came down in the evening, authorities decided to resume power generation in four units. The project has been generating about 38 million units every day. Punjab gets 114 MW power daily from the project, Haryana 64 MW, Chandigarh 8 MW, Himachal Pradesh 547 MW, Delhi 142 MW, Jammu and Kashmir 105 MW, Rajasthan 112 MW, Uttar Pradesh 225 MW and Uttrakhand 38 MW.
The remaining two units would be operational in a day or two.
The closure of power generation had caused a loss of Rs.810 million. .

High silt level in the River Satluj following heavy rains has prompted the authorities at the Nathpa Jhakri power project(Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh) to close the plant so that the turbines could be protected from getting damaged.

The 1,500 Megawatt hydropower project in Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh, supplies electricity to the states of northern India, remained closed for the fifth consecutive day.

Officials said that the permissible limit of silt is 4000 parts per million (ppm), which had exceeded 7, 500 ppm when the plant was shut down.

While the losses on account of the plant shutdown accrue to over some billions of rupees, officials maintain that the plant will resume operations in a couple of days.

“The water level has increased by 20 per cent due to which the silt has increased, therefore as a measure of safety, we have closed the plant so as to save the turbine parts from getting damaged. Though we are incurring losses because of this shutdown, these losses are nothing as compared to what we would incur if the turbines get damaged,” said N. C. Bansal, General Manager of the Nathpa Jhakri power Plant.

The power project located around 145 kilometers from Shimla, produces around 36 million units of electricity per day. The temporary shutdown has resulted in power shortage in many states of north India.

The project supplies electricity to the states of Punjab, Harayana, Uttrakhand, Rajasthan, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh.

A pilot project to be launched in three months: Would give access to a host of services through existing lines

The North Delhi Power Limited (NDPL) and the Ministry of Information Technology are working towards an initiative that will make broadband connections through power lines possible.

“We will send Internet signals through electricity transformer and channelize them through cables running overhead and underground,” said NDPL spokesperson Ajay Maharaj. “Residents would be given a device to plug into power points at home; they will have a broadband connection.”

How it works?
* Internet signals will be transmitted through power transformer
* Will be channelised through overhead and underground power cables
* Signals to be received by device plugged into a power point at home
* Signals to be transmitted to laptop or PC through the device

A TRUCK carrying frozen goods reversed into a fire hydrant in Assembly Drive, Tullamarine, last Wednesday morning, creating a 30 metre water jet on one of the area’s busiest industrial roads.

Fire station officer Grant Adams said the water shooting up on to the overhead power lines made a precarious situation.

“If the power lines fell down, they would’ve electrified the area where they landed,” Mr Adams said. “This was especially dangerous considering the amount of water on the ground and the people standing around it.”

As overhead power lines began to spark, the truck driver took initiative by reversing his vehicle back over the water jet. In doing so, he blocked the water from reaching the power lines and averted the potential for electrical hazard.

City West Water arrived at the scene within 15 minutes to turn off the mains.

Anne Barker, managing director of City West Water, said damaged fire hydrants are a top priority for repair.

“Our crew’s quick response time and turning the water off as soon as possible greatly reduced the amount of water which might have been lost,” Ms Barker said.

“Last summer we changed the way we respond to major bursts and now turn the water supply off as soon as possible, unless there is a threat to public safety or essential services. The new procedure has saved an estimated 64 million litres of water to date.”

Police barred traffic from Tullamarine Park Drive. No one was injured in the incident.
