Yahoo! supporting Wind Power in India

yahoo!Yahoo made good on its promise to become “carbon neutral” by the year end by announcing on Monday that it would invest in wind power in India and hydropower in Brazil.

The Silicon Valley internet giant is planning to balance out the 250,000wind power plant metric tonnes of greenhouse gases it spit up in 2006 through power consumption by supporting clean energy projects in two of its biggest global emerging markets.

What does 250,000 metric tonnes look like?

“Think of taking 35,000 cars off the road for a year, or turning off the lights on the Vegas strip for two months,” said Yahoo’s director of climate and energy strategy Christine Page.

Yahoo is partnering with local businesses to purchase offsets from 43,750-kw wind turbines in Vankuswade, Maharashtra, and Tenkasi, Tamil Nadu.

“This investment was particularly important to us, as India is one of the most carbon-producing regions in the world,” said Page.

“With our rapidly growing presence in India, we felt a sense of responsibility to encourage the development and use of cleaner energy there. We’re exploring various community programmes that will support and empower residents of these communities,” she added.

The internet giant is also partnering with EcoSecurities and CantorCO2 to vet and execute hydropower projects in Brazil.

“We know the issue of global warming is top of mind for our consumers and employees,” said Page.

India, which is trying to tap wind and solar energy in a big way to get clean energy and cut the bad pollution that comes from coal burning, should be warmed by Yahoo’s non-commercial, earth-friendly gesture.
